Cafe D'Mongos Speakeasy
About This Spot
Stepping into Cafe D'Mongos Speakeasy feels like uncovering a well-kept secret tucked away in the heart of Detroit. The space hums with a warm, nostalgic vibe — a gentle blend of rustic charm and true local character that invites you to slow down and settle in. Dim lighting, exposed brick, and echoes of live music create an intimate setting where time seems to pause just long enough to savor the moment.
This is a place where the pace is unhurried, designed for genuine connections and easy conversations. Whether you come for the music or the atmosphere, the friendly faces behind the bar and the cozy corners offer a sense of belonging that’s rare in a city that moves as fast as Detroit.
The menu may be modest, but every bite and sip here feels considered and authentic. The signature drinks carry whispers of Detroit’s spirit, like the famously smooth Detroit Brown or the playful twists on classic cocktails infused with local flavors. Pair that with a grilled cheese sandwich that locals talk about long after the visit—crispy, hearty, and perfectly comforting—and you get a taste experience that’s as down-to-earth as it is memorable.
It’s easy to see why regulars come back not just for the drinks, but for the atmosphere—a genuine slice of Detroit life, wrapped in music, laughter, and stories shared at the bar. Perfect for a night out with close friends or discovering something quietly special on your own, Cafe D'Mongos Speakeasy offers a snapshot of the city’s soul, one attentive moment at a time.

Nice bar. Great live music. Place was busy, but good service and drinks. Staff is very friendly too. Good place to hangout with friends. I recommend this place if you like a local live music.

Nestled in the heart of the city, offers a nostalgic journey back in time .From the moment you step inside, the live music ,rustic decor and friendly staff make you feel right at home. The staff are attentive and knowledgeable Just 4 in menu includes 3 drinks and a mouthwatering white boy grilled cheese. But experience is priceless must try in Michigan

An absolute Detroit gem. The vibe is unmatched, authentic, laid back, and full of character. The owner is a true Detroit legend, and it shows in every detail of the place. The grilled cheese is seriously next level, the drinks are strong and fun, and everyone you meet there is friendly and welcoming. Whether you’re visiting the city or lucky enough to live nearby, this is one of those spots you just have to experience. It’s the kind of place that makes you feel like a local, even if it’s your first time in.

Cool place with occasional live music. It is a little cramped, I wouldn't recommend a group larger than 4 unless you have a back up plan. They do have some tables for 6ish closer to the back but when I asked to get sat there the bouncer said it's closed, then 15 min later I saw some people go sit back there. Table service can be a bit slow when it gets busy so just buy from the bar in that case. Edit: i appreciate the response!!

Fantastic atmosphere, best grilled cheese I’ve ever had, and live music with outdoor seating. Make sure to give a fist bump to my man Charles. He did a fantastic job of keeping me safe from all the ladies who thought he was cooler than me including my wife.

Great music, great bartenders! This is by far the best scotch selection in the downtown area, and the most hospitable bar I have ever had the pleasure to step into. Thank you for your kindness, D'Mongo!

This place is magical. One of the best quirky homey bars I’ve ever been to. The door man is excellent, the service is fast, the drinks are fun and the company is even better. I mean they have highballs with rock n rye faygo. What more can you ask for. A staple and an amazing place to share some drinks with friends.

Quite the late-night place to be (in downtown Detroit); great live music; big energy big crowd turn out; nice touch when in a long line waiting outside and the security and host allowed all the ladies to move to front of the line. Eclectic decor. Multiple sections to the floor plan for table seating. I recommend anyone go check it out for oneself.
